NEW WORK — My latest album cover, REESE’S PIECES, created for Reese & Hassing Music was released on June 20th, 2025.
My recent work in mixed media is posted here and on Instagram. My grungy Journals are aged and coffee dyed, they include small books to write in, tags to finish, tiny envelopes for secret messages. Under the name of MARIE’S PAPER ART, I’ve also created a series of mixed media Fine Art Tags. They are made as an affirmation, a blessing, an inspired gift. Contact me to see more Art Tags, to buy one, or to order a special one made just for you.
“I was fortunate to be gifted one of Marie's Art Tags during a period of deep sadness. I liked the tag as soon as I got it, but I was surprised by the deep comfort it gave me. The thoughtful hand-made design, which incorporates nature and is beautiful no matter which side faces me, was very healing, and still is. Marie's Art Tags are magical.” — Miriam Newman

TEACHING ARTIST: I am teaching poetry, bookmaking, mask-theater, and paper arts residencies in elementary schools, low income high rises and assisted living facilities throughout 2025-26. Artful Aging programs is one of my favorite new ways to connect with adult learners. I am also looking forward to teaching my first Mixed Media Paper Doll class for adults at WetPaint in St. Paul, scheduled for March 7, 2026. A fun new venue for me. I contract work independently and through several arts organization, listed under Useful Links.
ART ON DISPLAY: I have several art pieces available in the MCBA store in Open Book and at the Burl Community Art Gallery in St. Paul. I’ve started taking my work on the road to art fairs around the metro area, a great way to share my work and interact with the community. My next fair will take place on November 22, 2025 at the Discovery Center in Oakdale, from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.
GRANTS: I have been awarded a Minnesota State Arts Board 2026 Creative Individuals grant to write memoir poetry recounting the story of my life in Sweden and the move to the United States. So grateful. As part of my grant, I will teach poetry workshops to artists with disabilities at Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts with a focus on their life stories.
In 2022, supported by another MSAB grant, I offered a series of poetry workshops at Interact that lay the groundwork for a chapbook featuring my poems in response to their work titled A TREE FULL OF ANGELS. I look forward to teaching at Interact again.
PUBLICITY: I was included in the The Minnesota Women's Press 2020 December Issue titled Changemakers & Legacy, featuring strong women of vision and action. Such an honor. LEGACY STORY.
My painting the RIVER OF LOVE was on full display in the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s Foot in the Door 5 exhibit alongside the work of 2000 other MN artists.
WORK IN PROGRESS: I’ve finished the illustrations (14 double spreads) of a picture book titled BELLA BLUE. This work was supported by a Next Step Grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. During the summer of 2016, five paintings from this project were exhibited at MCAD in a show titled IN WORDS AND PICTURES, highlighting thirteen Minnesota women artists. Originally created as a wordless picture book, much to my delight, Molly Beth Griffin stepped on board in the summer of 2020 and created beautiful words to go with the story. I’m still in the process of looking for just the right agent and/or publisher for this piece.
Four of my paintings appear in THE SOULFUL WOMEN CARDS, released by Blue Angel Publishing in Australia in 2016. The deck is a collection of oracle cards designed as a portal into the sacred feminine, aimed at awakening a woman’s inner guidance. The deck is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
POETRY NEWS: My poem LONG AFTER THE CARDINAL SINGS is featured on a new bench in Phalen Poetry Park, designed by Meme Lloyd for the East Side Arts Council.
In 2018, my poem FIRST DAWN was part of the Duluth poetry project WORDY DANCING, a celebration of poetry through dance, presented by Duluth Poet Laureate Ellie Schoenfeld. The same year Singers in Accord, a member-led choral ensemble from the Twin Cities, performed INSIDE OUT: Singing the Seasons of Life. The show featured songs and poetry, and a student of mine had a poem included that he wrote when he was in 4th grade. As his muse, I was given VIP parking and free admission to the show. The work of the muse tends to live underground, and this was a rare and heartwarming occasion to step into the light.
