A TREE FULL OF ANGELS, a collection of poems inspired by artists at Interact Center is now available for purchase through me in the form of a pamphlet stitched chapbook.
NEW WORK — My recent work in mixed media is posted here and on Instagram. It includes a series of FINE ART TAGS, created under the label of Marie’s Paper Art. One-of-a-kind, layered and lush, these pieces are created to be an affirmation, a blessing, a poetic prompt that fuels the heart. Contact me to see more Art Tags, to buy one, or to commission me to make a special one for you.
“I was fortunate to be gifted one of Marie's Art Tags during a period of deep sadness. I liked the tag as soon as I got it, but I was surprised by the deep comfort it gave me. The thoughtful hand-made design, which incorporates nature and is beautiful no matter which side faces me, was very healing, and still is. Marie's Art Tags are magical.” — Miriam Newman

TEACHING ARTIST: I am teaching poetry, fairy tale writing, bookmaking, mask-theater throughout the metro area in 2023-2024, mainly in elementary schools. I contract work independently, as well as through several elegant arts organization, listed under Useful Links.
GRANTS: As part of a 2022 MSAB Creative Support for Individuals grant, I will be offering a series of free poetry workshops to artists with disabilities at Interact. These workshops will lay the groundwork for a chapbook manuscript featuring my poems in response to their work.
PUBLICITY: I was included in the The Minnesota Women's Press 2020 December Issue titled Changemakers & Legacy, featuring strong women of vision and action. Such an honor. LEGACY STORY.
My painting the RIVER OF LOVE was on full display in the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s Foot in the Door 5 exhibit alongside the work of 2000 other MN artists.
WORK IN PROGRESS: I’ve finished the illustrations (14 double spreads) of a picture book titled BELLA BLUE. This work was supported by a Next Step Grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council. During the summer of 2016, five paintings from this project were exhibited at MCAD in a show titled IN WORDS AND PICTURES, highlighting thirteen Minnesota women artists. Originally created as a wordless picture book, much to my delight, Molly Beth Griffin stepped on board in the summer of 2020 and created beautiful words to go with the story. I’m still in the process of looking for just the right agent and/or publisher for this piece.
Four of my paintings appear in THE SOULFUL WOMEN CARDS, released by Blue Angel Publishing in Australia in 2016. The deck is a collection of oracle cards designed as a portal into the sacred feminine, aimed at awakening a woman’s inner guidance. The deck is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
POETRY NEWS: My poem LONG AFTER THE CARDINAL SINGS is featured on a new bench in Phalen Poetry Park, designed by Meme Lloyd for the East Side Arts Council.
In 2018, my poem FIRST DAWN was part of the Duluth poetry project WORDY DANCING, a celebration of poetry through dance, presented by Duluth Poet Laureate Ellie Schoenfeld. The same year Singers in Accord, a member-led choral ensemble from the Twin Cities, performed INSIDE OUT: Singing the Seasons of Life. The show featured songs and poetry, and a student of mine had a poem included that he wrote when he was in 4th grade. As his muse, I was given VIP parking and free admission to the show. The work of the muse tends to live underground, and this was a rare and heartwarming occasion to step into the light.
